Objectives
After completing this lesson, you should be able to:
·         Describe an object by its colour;
·         Describe an object by its shape;
·         Describe an object by its measurement;
·         Describe an object by its function;
·         Describe an object by its properties;
·         Ask about the appearance of an object.

Dialogue 1
Caty : “Did you see a case, Dani?”
Dani : “What case?”
Caty : “A pencil case.”
Dani : “There were several pencil cases here. What colour is your case?”
Caty : “It’s black.”
Dani : “How big is it?”
Caty : “It’s about this big, 20 cm long and 5 cm wide.”
Dani : “And the shape?”
Caty : “It is shaped like a cube.”
Dani : “Oh yes. Somebody took it. I think it’s in the administration office now.”
Caty : “Okay. Thank you.”

Dialogue 2
Gina : “I’m going to design an invitation card for my birthday.”
Hani : “Yes, it’s better to make it yourself than you buy it.”
Gina : “How big should it be?”
Hani : “I think it should be small about 10 cm wide.”
Gina : “What about the shape? Should it be rectangular in shape.”
Hani : “Why don’t you make it heart-shaped.”
Gina : “And the colour?”
Hani : “Make it pink then.”
Gina : “All right. Thank you for your suggestion.”

Questions
1.      Who lost the box?
2.      What is the box for?
3.      What is the box like?
4.      Who will design an invitation card?
5.      What will the card be like?

Attention
To ak about the colour of an object, you say:
§  What colour is it?
                     Is your new shirt?
Or
§  What is the colour of it?
Your new shirt?         
To answer those questions, you say:                          
§  It                  is    black.                                  
                             White.                                
                            Red.                                                   
                             Yellow.
                            Blue.                                                   
                             Pink.
                             Brown.                                   
                             Orange.
                             Green.                                
                             Violet.
                             Gray.                                  
To ask about the shape, you say:                               
§  What shape is it?                                            
                        The case?
§  What is the shape of it?                                 
                                    The case?
To answer the questions, you say :
§  The shape             is rectangular. Or it is rectangular in shape.          
§  It                          is the triangular      
                             Circular                  
                             Square                    
                             Pyramidical.           
                             Conical.                 
                             Cubic.                    
                             Cylindrical.            
Or you can also say:
§  The shape is like          a rectangle.
§  It is shaped like           a triangle.

A pyramid.
A cone.
A cube.
A cylinder.
A bird.
A star.
An apple.

To ask about measurement of an object, you say:
§  How    big       is it?
            High
            Wide
            Long
            Thick
§  How much does it weigh?
Or you can also say
§  What is            the size            of it?
The height
       Width
        Length
        Thickness
        Weight
        Area
To answer those question, you say:
§  It is 150 cm high.        Or its height    is 150 cm.
§  It is 50 cm wide.         Or its width    is 50 cm.
        70 cm long.          Or its length        70cm.
        5 cm thick.           Or thickness        5 cm.
It weighs 50 kg           or its weight        50 kg.
§  The area of the Rectangle is 60 cm2. (Read: Sixty square centimeters)
§  The area of the Box is 150 cm3. (Read: A hundred and fifty cubic centimeters)

To ask about the function of an object, you say:
§  What is the function of it?
                                       The dictionary?
Or
§  What is it                        for?
              The dictionary

To answer those questions you say:
§  Its function is to hold pens.
§  It is for finding out the correct pronounciation of a word.
       For covering the book.

To ask about the property of an object, you say :
§  What does it  have?
                   it  consist of?
§  What are    its properties?

To ask those question, you say:
§  It has one leg.
     legs.
a hendle.
§  It consist of four legs and one seat.
         a keyboard, a CPU and a monitor.
